Moving blog to something else

April 6th, 2010 Petros No comments

I was thinking about this for a long time. I want to move my blog to something else that will look like a blog but not exactly. It is going to be on a different URL too. There are four reasons behind this decision:

  1. My current hosting provider stops supporting Wordpress. (my blog runs on a shared hosting account)
  2. 7deeds doesn’t represent what I do or who I am anymore
  3. I want to include more activities that don’t really belong here but I don’t want to start 10 different blogs
  4. I want to promote my personal business(es)

As a programmer, I want to be a wise guy and also break the rule “Don’t reinvent the wheel”. I will not use any blogging or CMS platform. I will rather create it from scratch using Rails. Please feel free to call me names.

More about the move later. When everything is ready, I will notify you through the last post for this blog.

Stupid juice machine

March 11th, 2009 Petros 1 comment

I have this juice machine, which unfortunately is stupid. When I try to produce one glass of orange juice, I then have to clean up the mess for half an hour. Talking about stupid design.

FAIL!

When open id doesn’t work

October 17th, 2008 Petros No comments

I really like the idea of open id. In almost all scenarios open id wins. There is one problem though. Availability of the open id server that authenticates you is important. What happens if the server is busy or down?

Even if the site you are trying to log on, also provides the traditional means of username/password authentication, I am sure most of you will not remember those. You have to ask for an email with your password and wait and then log in.

As I write this post www.myopenid.com doesn’t respond and I cannot log on to a certain site that is part of my daily work.

Just a quick note to say that open id is not all roses.

Firefox bookmark organizer focus

October 15th, 2008 Petros No comments

When you first open the Firefox bookmark organizer (CTRL+Shift+B), the focus is not where it should be. Instead of being where the following image shows, it is in the list of bookmarks. I need to just press CTRL+Shift+B, and immediately start searching by typing.

Stackoverflow.com

April 18th, 2008 Petros No comments

I am following Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood for quite some time now. Recently Jeff announced he was working on a secret project with someone else he would not reveal. All my guesses where wrong. Today he announced they work closely with Joel in order to develop a free programmer community site. Wow!

We, programmers, can even help them decide how exactly this site should be by suggesting things and asking questions for them to answer in their weekly podcast, where they discuss about the new site.

They both announced that in their blogs: Joel’s announcement and Jeff’s announcement.

One thing is for sure… I am going to register to that site. Oh, I am downloading their first podcast while I write this post.

I have decided to keep this blog an English only blog. I have moved the most recent Greek posts to my Greek blog.

Here I am going to focus more on IT related subjects.

What is 7deeds?

May 9th, 2007 Petros No comments

Hello. This is my 7deeds blog. What is 7deeds? It’s my attempt to provide 7 things to the Internet community that will all be free. I don’t know when I am going to cover all the areas. All I know is I will try to produce 7 different free services or products for the community during my lifetime.

Why 7? Seven is my lucky number. I don’t know why. It’s always been my favorite number.

Who are you anyway? My name is Petros Amiridis. I am a professional programmer working as a freelancer at the time and living in Greece. I started my career as an employee but I have quitted my job a year ago and continued as a freelancer.

During the next few posts, I will introduce myself to you and I will share more details regarding what I am trying to accomplish by maintaining this blog. Let me just tell you that achieving seven deeds is a higher objective and that during my performance I will post about other matters too. Mostly about programming, but also about everyday stuff, since this is my personal blog.

I hope you will find the content interesting. At least I will try to write valuable stuff most of the time.
